To stand up for one’s own country, to fight for interests transcending the welfare of the individual: this is the advice of Callinus, and it carries special conviction because of the implication that the family is thereby protected from the enemy. Such things are, of course, also found in Homer, but in certain details Callinus ventures farther than Homer.

Hector harangues the Trojans in battle (Il. 15.494 ff.):

Let us fight in a body against the ships of the Greeks; whoever among you is hit and falls, let him die. It is not unseemly for him to die defending his fatherland. But his wife and his children are safe for the future, and his house and blameless property, when the Greeks have gone home with their ships.
