It then turns out that the following three statements are equivalent:

the material cause cannot be isolated from its effect;

the material cause is always present in its effect;

the effect always knows its material cause.

We have thus succeeded in giving a precise meaning to the concepts of material and efficient cause. Let’s try to summarize. If isolating X from Y changes the description of Y and that of X does not change, then X is an efficient cause of Y. If I cannot isolate Y from Z, then Z is a material cause of Y. We could say that the efficient cause is a weak version of the material cause.
