MASTERING THE PROFOUND EMPTINESS IS PRACTICING BOTH PATIENCE AND GENEROSITY
âTherefore, the Buddha said bodhisattvas should practice generosity without fixating on form.â
Here Buddha Shakyamuni quoted a scriptural authority to illuminate this issueâthe real generosity of a bodhisattva is free from attachment toward form; it is the perfect generosity with the emptiness of the three spheres.
âSubhuti, in order to benefit all sentient beings, bodhisattvas should practice generosity in such a way.â
Whether practicing patience or generosity, bodhisattvas should abide in the state of emptiness of the three spheres. However, within the conventional, in order to benefit sentient beings in the three-thousandfold universe, bodhisattvas should practice material offerings, Dharma offerings, and fearlessness offerings, which include patience or tolerance on profound emptiness.
âThe Tathagata said that all characteristics are not characteristics.â
The six perfections, no matter whether it is the characteristic of patience or of generosity, can appear like dreams or illusions within the conventional, but under examination with ultimate wisdom, they are not real characteristics.
âAlso, sentient beings are not sentient beings.â
Without proper analysis, countless sentient beings have been tortured in samsara, the ocean of suffering, but if we scrutinize the matter carefully, sentient beings are not sentient beings, their nature is no different from that of the Buddha.
Guide to the Bodhisattvaâs Way of Life also said, âSentient beings are like dreams and illusions, and when examined they are like plantain trees. Whether they reach nirvana or not, their nature would not change.â This means that when examined through ultimate analysis, the essence of all the sentient beings in this world is unborn and unceasing, completely unfindable, just as unreal as the heart of the plantain tree. If this is the case, whether a sentient being enters nirvana or not, their nature would not change a bit.
