Chapter 7

Gamble Saves the First Corps

Leavingthe fighting to John Reynolds’ First Corps, William Gamble’s troopers fell back southwest of Gettysburg at noon. About 1:00 p.m., a strong force of Confederates threatened the First Corps’ left flank near the southern end of modern-day Reynolds Avenue. Because Reynolds was dead, Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday was in command of the corps.

Colonel Chapman Biddle’s brigade held the left end of Doubleday’s line. Biddle’s men were in grave danger of being flanked by Col. James K. Marshall’s 52nd North Carolina Infantry of Pettigrew’s brigade near the Herbst farm buildings and orchard. A deep swale on the Herbst farm property hid their advance and allowed the Tar Heels to approach Biddle’s flank unseen. From his vantage point, however, Gamble could see the threat and determined to do something about it. The aggressive trooper ordered the commander of the 8th Illinois Cavalry, Maj. John Beveridge, to take his regiment southwest along the Hagerstown Road. Beveridge did as ordered, positioning his horsemen in an orchard south of the road near a stand of woods.1

Maj. John L. Beveridge, commander of the 8th Illinois Cavalry at Gettysburg. Beveridge performed admirably, particularly during the afternoon phase of the fighting on July 1.
