Chapter Twenty-One

Violet

I groaned and stretched in the parking lot of the bar, hand at the middle of my lower back like an old woman moments after Jacob helped me down off his bike onto wobbling legs, my heart pounding against my ribs from the rush of the ride.

The bar was little more than a metal shack with a crooked sign done in metal letters over the front entrance. “CLAY’S SALOON.” Bikes of all types were pulled up near the front, about a half-dozen lined up and down the front as they flanked the front door. An old, beaten down pickup off to the side. One neon sign burned in a window, proclaimed it “OPEN,” while a sign in another let you know what to expect inside: “BEER. LIQUOR.” Rock of some kind played low, and I could practically feel the bass shimmying up through the soles of the boots I’d changed into.

It was four hours after our little heart-to-heart in Nate’s bedroom, and I still couldn’t believe I’d called Jacob in while completely naked, with only a bed sheet and comforter to cover me. Allowing a man I hardly knew to see me in that state, for Christ’s sake?

I mean, I’d only had a split second to make the decision to cut him off at the pass. But, still, it was a very, very un-Violet thing to do! As much un-Violet-like as going straight from Nate’s hands to Carter’s, or Carter’s hands to Nate’s, or admitting how much the thought of three men turned me on.

Kissing both Nate and Carter goodbye before leaving had been almost as bad!

Not that I for even one moment regretted any of my decisions involving either of those handsome men over the last day and a half. No sir. Not one. Not anymore. Especially not after feeling their warm, strong hands on my body, and their warm lips pressed to mine one after the other. Zero regrets.

No, calling Jacob in had been the right choice. It had let me put the thought in his head, shown him just how serious I was about coming out here, with him, or without. Besides, I’d had no idea Carter would go the way he had with his decision, and I needed as much of an edge as I could get during the debate.

Thank God Carter realized how serious I was, even if he’d been so adamantly against it in the Pony’s parking lot.

Besides, as much as I hated to admit it even to myself, it had given me a really lovely chance to see Jacob without his shirt on. And, believe me, he did not disappoint. Not one bit. I was almost ashamed to admit that I had to fight down the urge to invite him into his friend’s bed right then and there.

I didn’t know how that would have turned out. But something in his gaze told me it would have been a winning proposition. Now, though, I only had two things on my mind: giving my back some relief, and finding the next clue about where Tulip was.
