Chapter Ten

“Ah, finally.” Alain stood from his chair at the head of the table. “I trust you’re both well rested and hungry.”

Jared snorted a chuckle, but a look from Tanya had him swallowing the accompanying comment.

“Thank you, Alain. I’m starved.” Raven sat across from Tanya as Aiden took the seat across from his brother. The look on the alpha’s face said it all. Keep your commentary to yourself.

“I’ve kept all discussion about this morning to a minimum. Speculation doesn’t serve without necessary facts.”

Aiden nodded, pouring Raven a glass of wine before filling his own. “Agreed. I motion we talk while we eat, that way the discussion can flow.”

“There are but two elders at this table, Aiden,” Gregory interjected. “Discussion may flow, same as the wine, but decisions will have to wait until the entire council can be brought up to speed and then deliberate.”

Conversation halted for a moment when Aiden paused with his wine glass halfway to his mouth. He put the glass down and met his uncle’s gaze.

“After what was witnessed this morning, my guess is this has moved beyond council sanction. It is a matter for the Sentinel Brotherhood, and as its head, I will determine our next course of action.”

The muscle in Gregory’s cheek tensed, but he inclined his head. “That may well be, but we haven’t heard from our lovely demonologist, yet.”

Jared grinned at that. “More like our resident Scarlet Witch.”

Aiden closed his eyes with an exhale.

“Am I missing something?” Raven asked. “Does someone know something about my mystery blood that I don’t?”

“No, cher. Jared may be Aiden’s second-in-command, but he is a forever child in his love of all things superhero.”

She looked between them. “I beg your pardon. Superhero?”

“The Scarlet Witch is a Marvel Comics character who manipulates energy,” Tanya replied apologetically. “She’s usually depicted with red energy balls in her hand and lightning in her eyes.”

“Ah.” Raven nodded. “I’m the only book geek in history to never get into comics or cosplay. Besides, my energy is purple. Not red.” She shrugged. “Sorry to disappoint.”

“On that note, perhaps you should tell us what you discovered from the entity.” Alain redirected the conversation beautifully. “That way we can all be on the same page.”

“Of course.” She inhaled quickly, sparing a quick look for Aiden. “Despite what you might assume, I’m not a mind reader. I can enter a psyche and glean information from residual images, either from pictured thought or memories. But that’s all. From there I can piece a story together. Is it inferred? Yes. Can I be wrong? Also, yes.”

She waited a moment. Reading the room, everyone seemed okay with what she said so far, so she explained the images she saw in the juvenile demon’s head.

“You saw someone perform a summoning. In the demon’s memory?” Gregory asked, skeptical.

“I saw what the demon was told. The person responsible for this…this…infestation hadn’t a clue as to what they were doing or what they were dealing with. They’re an amateur. Or at least they were.”

“And what does that mean?” he questioned a little more derisively.
