Chapter 17

Peri packed a quick bag and met Martan by the front door. “I’m ready.”

“I just got off the comm with Uncle Beshel,” Bastian said. “He and my parents are on their way here. He said it was important we stay in the house. It’s not safe for you out there.”

“I won’t sit around and do nothing. The longer we wait, the further away they’re getting.”

“They should be here in a few minutes. We’ll decide what to do then.”

“I’ll go by myself if I have to. I’ll hire a ship.”

Bastian looked sympathetic. “Peri, you don’t understand. The Degan Federation has closed its borders. We’re preparing to go to war with the Union. They’re calling for the expulsion of all off-worlders.”

Devin gasped. He held Dasha tighter, and hurried over to Callan. With a hand on the boy’s shoulder, he held him against his legs. “They can’t make us leave, can they? Aren’t our children citizens of the Degan Federation?”

Quickly crossing the distance, Bastian picked up Callan and put his arm around Devin. “You became a citizen when we bonded. This is our home. No one is making us go anywhere, my true one. I promise.”

The outer gate chimed, and Martan activated the panel by the front door. “They’re here.” He tapped a button to open the gate.

A few minutes later, they were all sitting in Bastian’s office. Peri stood by the door, impatient, ready to leave. No one here understood. It wasn’t their baby who had been stolen. They didn’t care.

Dashel had turned on the wall vid screen. News reports of the attack and the demonstrations played non-stop.

Devin sat on the couch with Bastian and his children. He was visibly shaken: trembling, on the verge of tears.

“You’re not being forced to leave,” Dashel explained. “But as you can see, it’s not safe for you.”

Peri was sick of hearing that. “If we track these people down, we can prove the Union wasn’t involved. Maybe the Prime Minister will call off the war.”

Beshel looked up from his pad. “That’s what I’m working on.”

“Well, let’s go then!” Peri snapped.

After tucking his pad into his pocket, Beshel took Peri aside, leading him into the living room. He placed his hands on Peri’s shoulders. “I would prefer it if you stayed here, with Bastian’s family.”

Peri shook his head. “You have no say over what I do or don’t do.”

“Peri—”

“No. That’s the way you wanted it. Remember?”

Beshel reached out and cupped Peri’s chin. He leaned down and when Peri met his eyes, he spoke softly. “I want you to be safe. Do you not understand that?”

The tenderness in Beshel’s expression shocked Peri. It was the first time Besh had shown him genuine affection, or any kind of emotion beyond lust or impatience. To cement it, Besh bent in closer and pressed a soft kiss to Peri’s lips.

Peri pushed up on his tip-toes and returned the kiss, letting Besh know that he returned the sentiment.

“I want you to be safe, too.”

“You have to be safe,” Beshel whispered.

“Then take me with you.
