NATALIE
Griffin has the nerve to look surprised. He even lets his mouth fall open. It might be funny if I didnât want to rip his head off. âWhat do you mean? What did I do?â
âPlease.â I march to my bedroom and peel off my robe, throw it onto the bed, and march to my dresser for pajamas. I feel like stomping.
He comes to a stop behind me in the doorway. âWhat did I do?â he demands.
Catching his reflection in the mirror over the dresser, I scowl. âYou brought him down here because you knew you would catch us like that, and you wanted to get in the way.â
âGet the hell out of here,â he says, and he even laughs a little. âYou think Iâm a child? That was not my intention, not at all.â
âWhy did you bring him down here, then?â After pulling on a shirt and shorts, I spin on my heel and glare at him. âBecause it sure as hell seemed a lot like you were bringing daddy down here to tattle on us.â Grabbing for my hairbrush, I drag it through my hair while grinding my molars. The fucking nerve of both of them.
âWould you relax?â
I hold the brush in the air, and my eyes narrow as I turn to face him. Heâs lucky I donât throw it at him. âHas nobody ever told you to never, ever tell a woman to relax? Like, in no circumstances whatsoever?â
âYouâre right. Youâre right.â He takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly before continuing. âI brought him down here to talk. I wanted him to try to work things out with you. I wanted him to listen to you, finally. Thatâs all. No ulterior motive.â
âDo me a favor?â I plop down on the bed, groaning as I continue brushing. âDonât do me any favors. I can handle this myself.â
âYouâve been doing a great job so far.â
Throwing the brush is starting to look better and better. âDid I ask for sarcasm? I donât think I did.â The fact is, Iâm exhausted, in pain, and a little embarrassed. I mean, my brother walked in on me grinding in Dallasâs lap. Thatâs a little embarrassing. Especially when he already thinks so little of me.
âItâll be fine. Heâll get over it.â He slowly crosses the room and sits beside me on the bed. As annoyed as I still am, I appreciate his nearness.
âHave you ever met my brother?â I ask with a snort, setting the brush down. âHeâs hell-bent on being miserable and bitchy. Heâs not about to listen to reason, so it wouldâve been a waste of time to talk to him now, anyway. He wonât believe anything but what he wants to believe.â And I could strangle him for it. Mason has no idea the position he puts me in every time he acts like an asshole.
âI was only trying to help.â Griffin finds my hand on the bed and closes his fingers around it. Itâs incredible how comforting his touch is.
