A Very Simple Principle

Happiness and suffering matter, no matter what the identity or species of the happy or suffering being. A simple (in principle) form of hedonistic consequentialism, called utilitarianism by philosophers, holds that in the end nothing else matters. But one need not be a utilitarian or a consequentialist of any sort to agree that happiness and suffering matter. Strip the claim down even further: suffering is bad. What results is a very minimal principle of behavior: do not act in ways that cause unnecessary suffering. One may well have other principles, and rules or heuristics dealing with the interactions of principles, but this you must have: do not act in ways that cause unnecessary suffering.
