Chapter Nine

It was a rookie move, but Roland was so focused on trying to help Jessie and her sister that he wasn’t thinking. Now he was facing real time if he didn’t find a way out of this. All his other arrests happened before he was eighteen, so the judges offered him leniency. But now that he was nineteen with priors similar to the current incident, it looked like a pattern. They were going to throw the book at him if something didn’t shake the case.

“Roland, what the fuck, man? What were you thinking?” Steve said when he entered the soundproof waiting room for their meeting.

Roland shook his head. He already knew what he had done was dumb. Jessie and Belle were smarter than him with their actions. They had both worn gloves, while Roland’s stupid ass had touched the gate when going back to find Belle’s phone.

Steve was Roland’s lawyer and the older brother of one of his best friends since elementary school. Despite the fact that Tyrell, Steve’s younger brother, was killed a few years ago, Steve still looked out for Roland as if he was his younger brother too. Even though their lives took different paths, Steve offered to be Roland’s lawyer when he graduated law school. Roland was grateful for the support and paid his friend a hefty retainer for peace of mind.

But now it seemed the well might have run dry, unless Steve had something that would help Roland’s case.

“Attempted murder, nigga?” Steve said, switching from his usual professional tone to their hood lingo. “You gotta talk to me. Make this make sense.”

Roland sighed. “I did it to help someone out.”

Steve eyed him. “Shot this nigga?”

Roland quickly shook his head. “No, I had nothing to do with the shooting. But I was at the scene afterward to help retrieve something that was left in the backyard.”

Steve continued to study Roland as if he was picking up what Roland was putting down. “So you never touched the gun. That explains why they couldn’t find your prints on it.”

“Exactly.”

“But your prints on the gate makes it look like you missed a step in trying to cover your tracks,” Steve said. “Also, the fact that the storm drain was near the house, and some old lady said that she saw a boy in a hoodie running near that drain after the gunshots sounded.”

“A boy in a hoodie?” Roland wrinkled his nose.

Steve shrugged. “Maybe it was the dude you were helping?” From his facial expression, Steve had lots of questions about who Roland was wrapped up with that had him doing their dirty business, but that was the least of his concerns. He was never snitching on his girl.

But who did the old lady see in the hoodie? Did Jessie and her sister have someone else helping them that night? If so, why involve him? He understood why Jessie would reach out, but why have him help her sister if Belle already had a nigga working on her behalf?
