What if you feel that your binge eating occurs so quickly that it seems you are not aware of what is going on inside of you in time for you to realize you need to use a skill? Some of our patients describe feeling like this, especially in the first half of the program.
Look over your list of prompting events from your Behavioral Chain Analysis Forms that led you to binge eat (see Exercise 5, item a). Familiarize yourself with this list of prompting events so that as soon as one occurs you become aware of it and can begin utilizing a skill in response. For example, if you find that getting into an argument with friends or family members is a trigger for you, begin using the skills as soon as you’re aware that you are raising your voice or others are raising theirs. The skill of observing is especially valuable to help increase your awareness of the current situation. For example, as soon as you observe a feeling of tightness in your chest, you could immediately begin diaphragmatic breathing. It’s good practice to use a skill whenever a prompting event takes place, even if it turns out that it might not be necessary and you are not likely to binge.
Below, list your most common trigger (from your list in Exercise 5 or additional ones you have thought of). List the earliest external and internal events you will practice observing in relation to the trigger (e.g., voice raised, fist clenched, sound of television turned on, freezer door opening), and list the skill(s) you will use as quickly as possibly once any of these occur:
