The headlights of the van streaked across the burned-out husk. It was difficult to tell what kind of business it once was. Tim followed it with his eyes for as long as he could. Then he turned forward again.
âDonât worry about that,â Reggie said. âIt burned down long before all this happened.â
âOh, thatâs gââ Tim began, then stopped at the sight of another one.
âThat one did happen this week,â Reggie informed him.
Tim looked at him in shock.
âYeah, some shady shit has gone down around here. In normal times, this isnât the greatest area. But there are more good people than bad. Like me, for example,â Reggie added proudly. âI grew up around here. Youngstown has been trying to shake a bad crime rap for a long time, but itâs been cleaned up a lot in the past few years.â
âHow bad?â Tim asked.
âYou know, the usual stuffâthe gangs, the mob, the crooked politicians. The shit that makes America, America. Itâs not nearly as bad as when I was a kid. The Feds stepped up on everything and built some prisons.â
âPrisons? As in more than one?â
âYeah, there are three in use now. Weâre going to be passing the biggest one. Want to make a quick sightseeing tour?â
âFuck noâplease drive faster.â
Reggie opened his mouth wide like a hippopotamus and let loose a boisterous laugh. âWhat, youâve never seen a prison before? Where you from?â
âNew Jersey.â
Reggie laughed even harder and slapped his thigh. âWhat the fuck are you worried about then? You live in the birth canal of filth and corruption. I donât think they even keep count of how many assholes you guys turn out anymore.â
âI donât live next to a prison during a blackout!â
âThe doors have locks on âem you know. Theyâre not dumb enough to make every lock electronic.â
âSo someone canât bash a guard upside their head and take a key?â Tim felt annoyed at being mocked for having legitimate concerns.
âThey could, but they havenât. Besides, weâd know about it.â Reggie tapped his CB radio. âWeâve got our ear right up to the horseâs mouth. Being on the police band does wonders for a manâs outlook.â
âUnless every guard gets knocked out and canât get to your magic phone.â
âRelax, this prison isnât the one youâd really worry about.â
âOh, so the horrors behind door number one arenât that bad?â
âNoâeveryone around here knows that door number two is the shitty one.â Reggie laughed for far longer than Tim liked.
He must be a regular down at the Chuckle Hut. Tries out all his new humdingers at the open mic every Thursday night.
âThanks for that set up, I havenât laughed this hard in a while. Anyway, we ainât going by the Ohio State Pen. Thatâs a damn super max. You wonât get in trouble for running over anyone hitchhiking over there. More like doing us a tax favor mowing down one of those fuckinâ psychos.â
âYou should quit your trucker job and work at the Youngstown tourist center because you are selling the shit out of this place.
