Chapter Twelve

“You’re sure the first stop on the map was the front yard?” Apollo questioned.

I fought the urge to immediately groan.

He was clearly still upset with me and searching for ways to get under my skin. I didn’t know what it was with him, but it felt like he liked it when I was out of control. He liked to push my buttons and then rush to “save” me when I exploded— literally.

It was one of the less desirable traits that he had, and I hadn’t noticed it sooner. I was too busy overanalyzing every word that came out of my mouth, and trying to tiptoe around everyone.

Now, it was like the fire magic gave me the boldness to accept my flaws enough to be able to notice his.

“Yes, I am the one with the eye of eden, remember? Unless you’ve suddenly somehow learned how to command the other four elements now? In which case be my guest and feel free to grab the map and take charge.”

I knew my words would cut, that was why I’d said them.

Apollo huffed at my comment.

“I think we should split up. We’d cover more ground that way.” He said before grumbling something underneath his breath.

The only word I could make out of the slew was temple, before he sulked off in his typical Apollo brooding fashion.

Atlas looked at me and Adler.

“I’ll go with him to make sure he doesn’t break something.” I could tell that Atlas wanted to roll his eyes, but he was far too sweet to do something malicious like that.

“Looks like it’s just me and you.” Adler winked, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

He was the laid-back, funny one. The one who was always eating, even in the middle of a paranormal crisis.

Him trying to change lanes and be the sexy, serious one was too much for me to hold in.

But what I liked about Adler was that he laughed too. He didn’t take himself too seriously, and his energy carried over to me.

I was glad that we were thrown together in the impromptu pair up, because when I was with him I never felt pressured to be an eden. I didn’t feel like I had to flaunt my abilities, or always say the right thing. I didn’t have to try too hard to be romantic, or even care what I looked like.

I could just be me.

My mind went back to the night we’d spent talking at the kitchen table when things had only moderately gone to crap.

That night, that conversation, was one of the few times that I’d had alone with Adler. It was short, but even then it gave me a glimpse of who he was— the type of person whom I wished I could be.

Care-free. Caring. Funny. He was the whole package, wrapped up in a tattooed, sexy package.

I raised a brow and started our work, searching through the bushes that sat in front of the house.

“You know he doesn’t mean to be like that, right?” Adler joined my side, sifting through the flocks of roses.
