Chapter 19: Marshal

I felt like the biggest jerk in the world as Sloane remained silent, obviously battling with the decision of whether or not to tell me about her mom's next product. Once again I hated my dad for putting me in this position, especially with a girl that I actually had feelings for.

That was why I'd had to stop kissing her, despite everything in me wanting to take her in my arms and see where things could lead between us. Our 'relationship' was going nowhere.

I thought of Christy in her hospital bed, in desperate need of a new pancreas. I thought of the doctor's threat to switch off the life support machine. I thought of my dad's stubbornness and downright evilness. He had to be evil to turn a blind eye to Christy's condition. I didn't care what had happened between him and Uncle Isaac. Whatever it was happened years ago. I couldn't believe their feud was now more important than Christy's life. So important that my dad had cut off every source of money from me so that I'd be unable to help. It was just madness.

"My mom read something about how hotel cleaners lost weight when they were more conscious about their daily activities," Sloane told me, drawing me from my thoughts. "Anytime they did something rigorous as part of their job they were told to view it as exercise. Soon the same activities they'd been doing for years, without any change in their weight, was causing them to lose weight."

I closed my eyes briefly. She was going to tell me. I almost wanted to stop her.

"She also read something about how a set of people were given a drink and told it was unhealthy. As a result, the drink had the effect that a high-calorie, sugar-filled drink would have on a person's body. The same drink was given to another group, but they were told that it was really healthy and nutritious. As a result the drink had a different effect on their bodies. I know it sounds unbelievable, and I don't know all the details, but it was a scientific study."

"I've heard of similar things," I muttered. "It's called the placebo effect."

"Exactly. My mom wondered what the implications could be for beauty."

I was glad when she stopped speaking. She hadn't told me anything concrete about her mom's next product. I felt strangely relieved.

Then she looked at me, and there seemed to be a calm resolution in her eyes, like she'd made some big decision. I braced myself.

"My mom's next product is a placebo." The words were quiet.

I cursed silently. She'd told me. Why was she telling me?

My emotions pulled in two opposite directions. I thought of Christy and was happy, but looking at Sloane I was devastated. Her telling me this meant she trusted me. I didn't deserve her trust.

"She's tested thousands of women, telling them the cream contains some special groundbreaking ingredients, and almost eighty percent of them have reported positive results in their appearance even though it's nothing special.
