Day by day, Darcy, Chauncey and the lads incrementally increased the skills of the two year olds, while Tom, Angus and their other lads worked with the equines who would soon join the spring racing circuit. Soon the Bingleys arrived to watch Black Forest improve. Tommy, Louisa and the two governesses began to spend much of the day in the classroom catching up on lessons lost through the time spent in travel.

Several times after the Bingleys arrived at Longbourn, Jane and Elizabeth and sometimes Charles drove the curricle into Meryton to visit their Aunt Phillips. On alternate days they often rode horses over to Lucas Lodge to visit Sir William.

On their first visit to their aunt, Jane and Elizabeth took her to lunch at the Last Blue Pig. The close proximity to their uncle’s law office gave him a chance to join them. But even more fun, they got to catch up on the local gossip with their favorite bartender. Mr. Carr. A couple of days later Charles joined the three ladies in a jaunt out to another favorite place, the Rosebud Bed and Breakfast, where they had a charming tea in the garden, while admiring the blossoming of roses of all colors imaginable.

On their second visit to Sir William, Elizabeth and Jane learned that Charlotte, Elizabeth’s dearest childhood friend, would be arriving soon with her baby girl, Lucia.

“I hope we are still here,” Elizabeth said truthfully. She dearly loved Charlotte. It was their obnoxious cousin, Charlotte’s odious husband, William Collins, that neither Jane nor Elizabeth could tolerate.

“And do not worry, Collins is not coming. He gets bored here with no Lady Catherine de Borough to visit.”

“How is Lady Catherine?”

“Withering away or so Collins says. He spends much of his time catering to her whims,” Sir William answered.

“His favorite pastime.”

“It certainly is. But that makes it easier for Charlotte to bring Lucia to see me. She is a beautiful baby. They were here for Christmas. Of course Collins could not come then. He had to give his sermons.”

“Where are John and Judy? We hoped to see them,” Jane asked, having been disappointed not to see their friends, John and Judy and their twins.

“They are in Derbyshire visiting Judge and Mrs. Bench.”

“And the twins? How are they?”

“They are adorable of course. And getting so grown up. Well, actually at least my granddaughter is; my grandson still sucks his thumb. And they are five.”

“Do not worry, Sir William. Boys always mature later.”

“Is Judy teaching them to ride? As I remember, she even rode bare back,” Jane reminisced.

“And standing up,” Elizabeth added.

“The twins are incredibly skilled riders, both of them.”

“I suppose Maria and Ralph are in Scotland,” Jane said, “and Junior.”

“I assume so. They will come soon since the weather is better. Ralph is now formally the duke and so has more responsibility, especially in the care of his grandmother. But I do expect them in the next week or so. Maria and Charlotte should overlap in their visits. They will like that exceedingly well,” Sir William explained.
