A twenty-first-century baptismal slip, whose brightly colored,

embroidered family tree might show through the baptismal

gown that would be worn atop it.

Really, this gown is not a gown but an undergarment, a slip—“embroidered with family tree to wear under baby’s christening gown,” meant to be “pass[ed] down from generation to generation for each family member to wear.” The mother who posted the picture on Pinterest worried that the “bright colors”—the green of the tree’s branches, the yellows and pinks of the birds, the oranges and blues and pinks in which baptized kiddos’ names are stitched—“are cute, but might show through.”77 She concluded that were she to make the slip, she’d probably choose lighter colors. I like it with bright colors, of course, because it makes a nice sartorial metaphor. In baptism, the child will be clothed with another garment over this slip—neither a christening gown nor a chrisom cloth, but the garment (according to Paul in Galatians 3:27) of Christ himself. That garment will overlay this orange and blue family tree, just gauzily enough for the tree to show through.
