Chapter Sixteen

As soon as I open the car door, my lungs fill with the sickly smell of roses. The night is dark and quiet, and the smell gets even stronger as I walk up to the front door with Ratticus still on my shoulder.

The Unseen’s magical wards don’t snag me on my way up the path. They’re not there anymore. Of course they’re not. I killed the Unseen in the most gruesome way possible, by yanking his heart right out of his chest. With nobody left to protect, his wards must have dissolved.

My hand tingles as I remember the feel of the Unseen’s beating heart in my palm. I swallow a wave of nausea at the memory, but at the same time I feel a rush of longing for the power his murder gave me. My dark magic uncurls inside me, a fuse waiting to be lit.

“You okay?” asks Xander, catching up to me. “You look pale.”

I shake my head, trying to banish all memories of what happened here as I stop outside the front door. “I’m fine. Just wondering if the Unseen’s body is still here, in his basement.”

Xander stops beside me. “I doubt it. Your friend Magnus said he was going to deal with it, whatever that means.” He tries the door handle and clicks his tongue. “Dammit. It’s locked.”

“Do you have your lock pickers?” I ask, wondering if I have enough magic left in me to open it. But Jess is already moving around the side of the house. A moment later, I hear glass smash. When I follow her around the corner, Jess is half-hidden in the shadows, but I can see her dark form kicking in a window more fiercely than is strictly necessary to get us inside.

“I’ll go in first,” I say when she finally stops kicking. “In case there are any magical boobytraps.” Before Xander can protest, I duck through the broken window.

I wish I had a flashlight. As many times as I’ve been in the Unseen’s basement, I’ve never seen the rest of the house, so I have no idea what kind of room this is, only that it smells musty and dank. My boots stick unpleasantly to the carpet as I feel my way along a wall, searching for a light switch. When I finally find one, it’s for a dim lamp in the corner, but the weak light reveals a small, gloomy room decorated with old couches, a dusty bookcase, pictures of hideous monsters on the walls, and a thick layer of grime over everything. It’s a living room, I guess, if it’s possible to call a room that when nobody in their right mind would want to live in it.

I walk through the room to the hallway, and turn on as many light switches as I can find. From the hall, I can look down to the front door, and see the door that leads into the basement. Ignoring it, I peer into the kitchen. Dirty dishes litter the
