Chapter Seven

Huss’ silver Maserati Alfieri pulled up to Regina’s beautiful home on the bright, but cool Sunday morning. He’d immediately spotted Toy’s money green Land Rover parked in the driveway alongside Regina’s sedan. Toy lived in Chicago with her husband, but that didn’t stop Huss from seeing his baby girl regularly. If he didn’t drive down to the Chi, then Toy would bring Teedra to him. Toy had family still in Detroit since it was her hometown, but she’d grown to love Regina, so whenever she came back, Regina’s would be her meeting place for her and Huss. With both of Huss’ parents being deceased, Regina had taken on the role of being like another mother to him. Much like she did with Grady.

Huss couldn’t get out of his car all the way before his daughter was busting through the door and charging his way full speed. Huss closed his door and scooped her small body up into his arms. For Teedra to be five, she was rather short for her age. Toy was only 5’3, so Huss figured she’d be short like her mother.

“There’s my favorite girl! Daddy missed you,” he said hugging her tightly.

Teedra was so happy, nothing but giggles fell from her lips as she rested in her father’s arms. Regina and Toy stepped outside, accompanied by Toy’s three-year-old son that was glued to Regina’s side. Huss hugged Teedra for a few more moments before sitting her down to retrieve some bags from his trunk.

Teedra bounced on one foot then the next anxious to see what her dad had purchased for her. Huss made a lot of money and spent it with no apologies on his daughter every chance he got. He wanted Teedra to want for nothing, and while Toy sometimes hated how much he spoiled her, that didn’t make him ease up on it.

“Go in the house; I’ll bring the stuff in,” Huss told her and watched Teedra shoot the bags one last smile before walking away. Huss grabbed the toy bags then grabbed the two designer boutique bags before closing his trunk and walking into the home.

His nose perked up at the smell of home cooked food. Being a single man had its up and downs. The biggest con was that he didn’t have a warm bed and warm plate to come home to. Huss had played the field, and at thirty years of age, was now ready to settle down, only with the right one.

“Ma, you cooked for me or for Toy?” he asked stepping into the living room.

Regina smiled as she stood to greet him. Grady and Huss would forever be her boys. She loved them and was always happy when they stopped by. The minute she’d received Toy’s call that they would be stopping by she’d already made up in her head that she would cook Huss’ favorite dish.

“You know I did, come here you,” she said smiling.

Huss dropped the bags and walked into her open arms, and she hugged him tightly.
