with the date of 23 July 1735—and then turned to questions of the arrangement of parts. Early I had determined that the text of the great work was best given in tabular form, but just how the information should be displayed had somewhat eluded me until now. Then I quickly decided that each major group of objects, be they mineral, plant, or animal, should bear an appropriate heading, with the names of the orders set vertically up the page in the far left-hand column. The second column would be devoted to the names of the genera, the third to concise and easily comprehended definitions or diagnoses of the genera, and the fourth to trivial names, for which latter notation, I tried where I thought appropriate to use but a single word. All of this was naturally to be given in the Latin language. Here is a good example taken from the Order Serpentia, of my Class Amphibia, in which I properly place the turtles and the tortoises (genus Testudo); the frogs and the toads (genus Rana); the crocodiles, alligators, lizards, skinks, salamanders, chameleons, etc. (genus Lacerta); and the numerous different kinds of snakes, of which I include the vipers, asps, cobras, sea-snakes, and those snakes commonly found in various freshwaters (genus Anguis).
