CHAPTER TEN

␥

TAAVI

I signed up for a rescue mission, not couples’ counseling…but that’s exactly what I’m doing.

Roshan and Ziggy won’t stop arguing as we set off through the wetlands of what used to be North Carolina, ruined houses destroyed by flooding and bad weather all around us. The coordinates are a day’s hike away, and I’m more concerned with the prospect of the Diavolos catching up with us, but the two of them have prioritized their little spat over survival.

“I can’t believe you would risk our operation,” Roshan mutters from up ahead. “You’re putting us all in danger, you know that, right?”

“You didn’t have to come,” Ziggy shoots back. “I’m sure we would have been just fine with Taavi. All you are is dead weight.”

I wince. I really don’t want to be part of this…but she seems intent on dragging me into it.

“Right–because none of my skills could possibly be useful in a crisis, isn’t that right, Taavi?” Roshan deadpans.

“Gods help me,” I mutter. “This was worth more than a bathroom handjob, Jupiter…”

“What?” Ziggy asks.

“Nothing!” I call back.

The arguing isn’t the only obnoxious thing about how this op went wrong–it’s also our little trek through a swamp, which I absolutely did not sign up for. Tauro leather doesn’t hold up well when wet; I’m going to have to get my whole suit replaced. Not only that, but I had to leave my long-cherished bike up on the hoverway.

This had better be worth it…and hopefully it will be, because we have women on Aelydon that need the help of a human doctor.

I know she’s gonna save lives.

That doesn’t make this any less annoying.

“You two should try to keep it down,” I tell them, raising my voice slightly to reach beyond the women between us. “We don’t know who’s out here and who’s chasing us.”

One of the women we rescued–the young one with wavy dark hair, with bruises all over, starts to tremble. I increase my pace to catch up with her, but she flinches when I try to touch her shoulder.

I blanche.

The things the Diavolos have done here…the Tauros aren’t angels by any means, but we don’t do this.

We don’t treat humans like animals.

“Don’t be afraid,” I say. My English isn’t great, but at least I’m trying. “I’m not going to hurt you. We’re taking you somewhere safe. What’s your name?”

Her chin trembles, her dark eyes wide. “Samara.”

“Samara, I’m Taavi,” I say with a small smile. “You’re going to be just fine.”

She bites her lip. “Forgive me if I don’t believe you,” she says quietly. “My mom and I…she was just trying to help me get away and they said they were going to execute us both. I’ve never been more afraid.”

“No one is getting executed,” I say. “You have a safe place to land on Aelydon. We don’t treat people this way where I’m from.”

“Not where I’m from either,” she says. “Before your people came here, this…this didn’t happen.”

I’m sure a lot of Earthers would beg to differ…but I don’t mention that.
