He slept the clock around, waking with dawn on December twelfth. He bathed, dressed, then purchased food from a man taking milk and bread to the local market. Soon he was settled at his small dining table and dove into his correspondence, praying it would distract him from worry over Luc.

Much of the correspondence was of a social nature, some from local businessmen interested in shipping goods with Cal’s company, but only two pieces were of particular interest.

The first was an invitation from Governor Claiborne to a reception in honor of General Jackson who had been in the city for close to two weeks. Cal cursed. Meeting with Jackson was imperative, but Luc was more important. How could he juggle both?

Of course, my brother has chosen to leave me without explanation, so there’s nothing to juggle. Nothing but worry.

The second message came from Celie. Surprised and a bit pleased, Cal read the note then read it a second time to be certain he had not misunderstood.

Cal,

I must speak with you about recent events. My mother and I will promenade at the levee this evening. If you were to encounter us there, I believe we could find the opportunity for a few moments of conversation.

With kind regards,

Celie
