The Gail Force

As part of his vision for Miners Landing and the Crab Pot Restaurant, Hal purchased a forty-six-foot commercial fishing boat from a multi-generational crab-fishing family located on the southern coast of Washington. Built in Mount Vernon, Washington, the Gail Force was specifically designed to fish for Dungeness crab in and around the shallow waters of Willapa Bay, a niche fishery in an intertidal zone that is heavily populated with crabs and other sea life. By vertically integrating this component of the restaurant’s supply chain, the costs associated with one of the most expensive ingredients on the menu can be kept in check. In addition, the Griffith family can be assured that sustainable practices are used, the restaurant’s carbon footprint is minimized, and local fishermen supplying the crabs are directly supported. “It’s the same sort of concept as farm-to->table restaurants,” Kyle says.

And in the same way that farmers work long, hard days to grow the corn and potatoes in the Seafeast, the crew of the Gail Force puts in fourteen to sixteen hours a day during the crabbing season. The captain, who has decades of maritime experience, and the crew often wind up doing much of their work in the cold, windy dark beneath sodium or LED lights, given that the peak of the season (normally December and January) coincides with the shortest days, and most inclement weather, of the year, which means the crew needs to start early—around 4:00 a.m.—to get to all their crab pots each day. The boat is licensed to have five hundred crab pots in the water at a time, and the pots can fill up daily. That means that once a day they need to be hoisted onto the boat, emptied, re-baited with squid and razor clams, and re-set into the water. Depending on the size of the crabs caught, each pot could yield fifty mature males, and on a good day early in the season, it’s conceivable the Gail Force might bring in twenty-five thousand crabs in a single day.
