Shanell realized she forgot to leave Lynn’s paperwork with Val. She went to take it back to her and told me she’d meet me at the hospital. Once we got there, it was confirmed Spence had food poisoning. He was resting comfortably, after his stomach had been pumped.

After a while, we could go inside to see him. Shanell had gotten there by then and came along with me. It was crazy, seeing my man laid up like that. When he saw my face, along with Shanell’s, nigga started grinning. I didn’t even wait for him to talk shit about it.

“I told you about eating that exotic shit, playa.”

“I won’t fuck with it no more, nigga.” Shanell was saddened by Spence’s appearance. I knew it was hard for her to see him this way.

“Hello, Spence. It’s good to see you. I’m sorry it’s like this though,” she said, sympathetic.

“Yeah, I know, ma. I’m a soldier, don’t worry. It’s good to see you doe. Looks like the someone found his way home.” Shanell looked around the room, wondering who.

“Yeah. Alright, nigga. I’mma let that comment slide since you laid up.”

“Nigga...” Spence suddenly had a coughing attack, “excuse me. Damn, it hurts when I do that.”

“I guess so, after what you’ve just been through,” said Shanell.

“Nigga, you can handle that pain. I’ve seen you deal with harsher shit than this.” Spence adjusted his bed to sit up more as he talked.

“Man, I’m ready to fuck that chef up. Somebody got a ass whippin’ coming.” Shanell was curious about the food.

“Where’d you guys go?”

“Jay picked the place. Always wantin’ food n’ shit.” I walked closer to his bed.

“Nigga, that wasn’t me. That was Antonio this time. I didn’t even eat.”

“I don’t know who picked the spot then, but um, it was some spot we went to once we got out here.”

“Man, I just had drinks. I ain’t order no shit from there.”

“So who they got covering you with Antonio?”

“Geo looking into it now. You off the clock, nigga. Just get better. We gotta get ready to go. I’ll come and holla at you later tonight or tomorrow.”

“Don’t be hangin’ out on the town without somebody with you, Jay.”

“Chill! I’mma be straight. I’m not gonna do nothing stupid.” Shanell came over to give Spence a kiss on his cheek, then we walked out of the room holding hands.

“It’s finally time to eat,” I said.

“Spence was right. All you think about is food.” I cozied up to her ear.

“Baby, you gon’ feed me?” She looked at me strangely, wondering why I was whispering about eating and shit.

“Yeah. I can fix you something at my place.”

“Baby, what I’m talking ’bout don’t need no fixing.” She started smiling. It took her moment to catch on. When she did, she shook her head and took my hand, pulling me along so we could go join the others. Sienna and Geo were in the sitting area, waiting for us to come out. Geo walked up to me.
