Chapter Thirteen

Had Lago just called her by her real name? As terrible as it might be, this was the real world, where women weren’t allowed to wear shoes, and weren’t allowed to speak up in the presence of men. She couldn’t stop thinking about it even as the village—her village, it seemed, though it also seemed she had come there as a captive rather than growing up in the assemblage of huts by the little river—came into view on the other side of a rise. On the other side of the river there seemed another herd, and three more men in charge of it, though the herd was too far away for Melanie to identify the animals, until the unmistakable sound of goats’ bleating came to her ears as they drew closer. In the village, out in the sun between the huts, which seemed placed with no order at all except perhaps that the big one stood more or less in the middle of them, women worked. The older women wore a kind of smock, which seemed to be pinned at both shoulders, but the younger adult women were naked, as far as Melanie could see at first. They seemed mostly to be pounding what Melanie thought must be some sort of grain in big stone mortars.
