Chapter Seventeen

WHEN DID SANDRA GET here? Raimond asked himself, remembering to breathe. The bigger question was why did she bother? Was she there to torture him with her beauty, but with a “don’t come near me” snub when he was in arm’s length?

Sandra moved throughout the place, seemingly content to evade him. She was unaware of the stares she was receiving, including his. She was a timeless beauty with the white garb draped over her ageless figure, giving her an angelic glow. When she did acknowledge him, it was in a cordial manner, nothing more.

Equally as beautiful was his baby girl who had blossomed into a stunning young woman. Kelsi was radiant as an expectant mother. He had lost the years in between that he could never get back. She looked like her mother when he and Ivy married. He hadn’t expected her presence to paralyze him with fear of saying the wrong thing and send her running. He wanted to hug her and never let go, but Kelsi gave him a “don’t even think about it” look.

So Raimond had backed off, giving her space to soften and hopefully to appreciate his work. While he entertained and networked with local businessmen, all Raimond could think about was getting to Kelsi. When he was able to break away and seek her out, he was shocked to see her huddled in a corner with, of all people, Kidd. Raimond could only imagine their plot of his demise. Not wanting to make a scene, Raimond had backed off and bided his time.

That’s when he began to pray and hadn’t stopped. First, he gave thanks for the amazing turnout and offers for generous donations from prominent Whites and Blacks in the community. That kept the smile on his face, even as his heart ached.

Don’t focus on what you don’t have, but what I’ve given you, God whispered.

Of course, the Lord was right. He straightened his stance and took another glance at Sandra who was chatting away with the women in her family.

“Congratulations, man, you pulled it off,” Townsend said, blocking his view. His friend had flown in from D.C., for this occasion. “Dace outdid himself with the sculptures, the music—” He whistled. “Top notch. Everything seems to have fallen in place.”

Not everything, Raimond thought as he slipped his hands in his pockets and peeped over Townsend’s shoulder and kept his eyes locked on his target. “Thanks.”

“I thought you were going to need extra people for the exhibits, but somehow, you’ve managed to find some engaging narrators for all of them.”

“Huh?” Raimond had eight displays and only four people had volunteered to give talks, which included Parke and his brother Cameron. The other displays were self-guided. “I don’t.”

Townsend chuckled. “Then you have been invaded.” He pivoted on his heels and Raimond followed him.

He checked their biggest attraction: The Journey exhibit, which featured Dace’s the African queen and her throne, the 3-D slave cemetery, and White House hologram. Even though it was meant to be a self-guided tour, Parke Jamieson mesmerized visitors with his historical knowledge and passion.
