6. Now, let’s focus on when you are alone. What are thoughts that make you feel safe and like you have access to a core identity? These thoughts could be about people you love, people who have been there for you in a real way, people who know you well and care for you. They can also be related to your strength and resilience, and your ability to know your own goals and values.

7. Next, consider the last time you tried to please someone by becoming who you thought they wanted you to be. Did you say or do something you did not really want to? On some level, it may have felt “tried on” but “not really you.” Maybe a friend complained about a mutual friend; let’s say you did not really feel the same way, yet you chimed in—because you thought that would be a required response.
