Box 12.1: Common difficulties and helpful hints with the compassionate memory exercise

Common difficulties

Helpful hints

I can’t remember a time when I was compassionate to anyone.

It can be frustrating and disappointing when this happens. So, if you can, see if you can engage briefly with your soothing breathing and with a warm tone of voice, reminding yourself that this is not your fault and doesn’t make you a ‘bad’ person.

Sometimes it is helpful to reflect on what might seem like unimportant or insignificant experiences; for example, memories of holding a door open for someone, or wishing someone a nice day, or even taking time out to look after, stroke or feed a pet. The key thing is to give yourself the opportunity to connect with the experience of being kind, caring and helpful, regardless of how big or small the gesture was.
