Theo didn’t take her through another fast-food drive thru. He didn’t bother with any fancy destinations, either. Bryce watched the woods outside the passenger window of Theo’s truck and realized that he was taking her back to his cabin.

Her heart fluttered nervously. She couldn’t deny her excited anticipation either.

The trees parted and a small cabin hunkering low to the ground appeared. This was not like Reece’s cabin, which stood like an expensive mirror propped against the side of the hills because of the grand window that took up the front of the A-frame. Theo’s cabin had a cozy porch covered by a roof that extended from the very top of the building.

She wondered if the single window on the second floor led to Theo’s bedroom. Her face warmed just thinking about it. She shook herself as Theo came around to her side of the truck and opened the door for her. He didn’t lead her into the house, but around the side to a shed.

Theo pushed the door aside. His shoulder muscles worked, pulling tight and drawing her attention. She almost didn’t notice the black cat sitting on the edge of a saw table.

Her stomach dropped the moment she saw the pookah waiting for Theo. The creature wouldn’t run and tattle to her mother. It cared little for court politics and the power in playing that kind of game. This fae craved a different kind of power. It had set its sights on Theo and the sustenance it might stand to gain from Theo’s fear.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” Theo said dryly. “Get out of here. You’re not the first fae to try to make me fall on my own saw. I’m not afraid of you or the saw.”

Bryce reached out for Theo and held the back of his shirt. Her grip on him didn’t have the power to stop him, but the gesture gave him pause anyway. He glanced back at her, confusion clear on his face.

Theo had spent too much time around the small fae. The little tricksters were easy to dispel with a few loud words or a stern look. They might have caused him strife in the past, but they weren’t worthy of anyone’s fear.

The pookah, on the other hand, was another story altogether.

“Tread carefully,” Bryce said.

Theo’s lips twisted to the side. She could tell exactly what he was thinking.

“I’m not a lesser fae,” she clarified. “I’m someone with standing and power, and that fae still scares me.”

His expression changed as if he was seeing her for the first time. Her stomach turned as he studied her anew. She’d let him believe whatever he wanted of her, but her time of hiding had ended. Theo would not understand the gravity of their situation unless he knew more about her.

He turned back to the pookah. She let go of Theo’s shirt, albeit reluctantly. Foreboding disaster made her mouth dry. She clutched her hands to her stomach to keep them from shaking.

“I get it now,” Theo said. He reached to the side and pulled an iron bar out from a bin of tools.
