chapter sixteen
After dusk, Darrell looked up from his desk and noticed that Bill and Ned had their heads together, whispering. âWhat's the matter with you guys?â
Ned shook his head and whispered, âDarrell, I'm sorry, but Bill here might have a problem.â
Darrell knew Bill was asking about the weather report earlier from overhearing their conversation. Still, they seemed deep in discussion again, and the talk quickly moved to the subject of medication.
Bill broke the silence and stood up, and said, âI need my pills from my room. My hands are shaking too much. Iâm serious. Iâll go into seizures without them.â Then he got up, shuffled past Darrellâs desk, and walked toward the door.
âUh,â Darrell said, looking up from his desk with a look of concern on his face. âThat's too bad, Bill.â Then Darrell rolled his eyes when Spam scoffed.
Bill mumbled something, turned around, and shuffled back to his seat. But a moment later, he got up again and headed for the door.
Darrell shook his head. This was not good. âBill, wait,â he said.
âStop,â John said.
âI have to go,â Bill said.
âDonât you touch that door,â John warned.
âWatch me.â Bill grabbed the doorknob and pulled.
âBill,â Darrell pleaded, and everyone began to scream.
Bill stared at Darrell with fear and disbelief on his face and, with trembling fingers, pushed the door open. Then Bill froze, and a look of anguish overcame him. His hands were still shaking, and he slowly backed up to the door, pushing on the door with his right hand.
But John was faster and knocked his arm away.
Darrell stood and said, âEveryone, calm down before someone gets hurt.â
Bill was breathing fast and had a laser death stare trained on John.
John stood back first and ran a hand through his hair. âHas anyone ever seen this man have a seizure?â John asked the gathered group.
They looked from one to the other. Darrell could tell by their expressions that not even one of them had ever seen anything like it, but Spam and John didn't know them as well as he did.
âWhat?â Alice asked.
Marilyn said, âA seizure?â
âYeah,â Bill said and took a step closer to the door, and thatâs when Spam moved in.
Ned raised his hand then and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. âYes, I have. On exactly three occasions, I have witnessed this man have a seizure. Gruesome business. He bit his tongue the last time. I know itâs impossible to control. It's frightening to watch and even more so to endure. Blood everywhere.â Ned rubbed his chin.
But it was Spam that looked around, and his face clouded over.
Then Darrell couldnât help but smile when a glass of water slipped from Spam's hand and went sloshing to the floor.
âDon't worry about that, Spam. I'll get Nance to clean it.â He rushed to his desk, opened a drawer to grab a dry towel, and tried to hand it to Nance.
She looked at it and shook her head. âIâm not touching that,â Nance said. âYou can clean up your own mess.
