Spare Cartridges, by Alfred R. Waud. Library of Congress.
When the Confederates in front of us learned of it they came over to us, and we had quite a little visit. They first wanted to know if there were any Ohio boys among us, there were none. We told them we were from Iowa. They had not seen any Iowa men before. They said they were from Arkansas. They expressed themselves as if they were not much interested in the war, and wished it would soon be over, and thought it would be much more reasonable if the politicians who brought on the war and are still pushing it forward, were made to do the fighting part, rather than to put them to do the fighting who hardly know what the fighting is about. Thus we conversed until we received orders to resume hostilities and in a very few moments we were shooting at each other with intent to kill. The last remark made was for us not to shoot until they got within their rifle pits, a request that was always held sacred on both sides of the line.135
During these pleasantries, the grisly work continued for the men of Adamsâs brigade. With no time to bury the dead in individual graves, the unfortunate victims of Laumanâs attack were laid in a shallow area converted into a burial trench. Due to the decomposed state of the corpses, the burial details pushed and pulled the bodies into the burial trench (near the presentday intersection of Rankin and Gallatin) with the aid of long-hooked poles. According to a Confederate artilleryman from another part of the siege lines who came to witness the spectacle, âIt was the most sickening sight I ever saw.â The remains of Pughâs men were not removed until 1872, when they were reinterred in the Vicksburg National Cemetery.136
