Trade was the force that brought the most visitors of all into the medieval city. The great fairs held twice a year in the French city of Troyes attracted merchants not only from across France but also from Spain, Italy, Germany, Flanders, England, Scotland, and Scandinavia. Venice had so many foreign merchants visiting on a regular basis that in the early 1300s the city began to construct permanent business centers. Venetian merchants themselves voyaged to most of the known world, everywhere from England to North Africa to Constantinople and beyond. Many Venetians and others lived and did business in foreign cities for years at a time.
