Several hours later, Reid held his cell in hand, a text from Jack waiting for a return call. Reid headed outside for privacy from Jessie, Megan and Ella sitting at the dining table. They’d had a wonderful time at dinner and Reid didn’t want it to end. Especially not the conversation and family atmosphere that’d been missing in his life since Diane died.

Not that it was going anywhere. Megan made that clear in her statement to Sydney. It had taken him a few hours to come to grips with the rejection, but his anger melted away when he realized he’d have said the same thing. With Diane’s loss still weighing him down, he wasn’t free to pursue Megan. Once they apprehended Fowler, they’d go their separate ways.

Fowler. The last thing he wanted to think about right now. But the text from Jack sounded urgent, and Reid couldn’t put him off. Not when Megan’s and Ella’s lives could be at stake.

A hearty wind whipped in Reid’s face and he felt moisture in the air. He could see his breath as he dialed Jack and wouldn’t be surprised if it did snow this week as predicted. It would be a fantastic event with Christmas in a few days.

Reid pulled his jacket tighter around his neck.

“What’s up?” Reid asked after he connected.

“You’re not gonna like this,” Jack said. “Fowler’s gone missing. He was supposed to check in with his probation officer today, and he never showed up.”

“Did they send someone out to follow up with him?”

“No, but I’m sitting outside his place and no sign of him. I’ll stay until morning to see if he returns.”

“You’re right.” Reid paused and looked into the dark sky, wondering if Fowler could possibly have tailed them out here. “I don’t like not knowing where he is.”

“Sorry for the bad news, but I thought you should have a heads-up.”

“I appreciate it, though I’m certain he didn’t follow us.”

“Agreed. But maybe he remembers you from the trial and he saw Megan leave with you. It wouldn’t take long on the internet to discover you manage the resort.”

“Even if he did figure that out, we’re staying at the lodge. It has no tie to Valley View.” The lodge’s property abutted the resort, but Reid’s grandfather had legally separated the resort from the home when he built them. Fowler wouldn’t be able to find any official records to lead him to the lodge.

“But the locals know, right? He could come to town and chat up one of them. Maybe at a gas station.”

Reid thought about Gladys Miller, the local gas station owner and busybody. She’d be glad to share any piece of information she could.

“It’s possible, I guess,” Reid admitted reluctantly. He didn’t want to think he hadn’t done his due diligence and let Fowler find him so easily. Still, he couldn’t take any chances.

He thanked Jack and disconnected. He punched his speed dial number for Russ. “You and Sydney wouldn’t want to form a protection detail tonight, would you?”

“Fowler figure out where you are?” Russ sounded sleepy.
