Thanksgiving—The Familiest Day

Thanksgiving is super important to me as a time for the entire family to get together. It’s always a group project. Nobody is expected to do all the work. Someone would volunteer for vegetables. Someone else for turkey. Still another for dessert. Without a lot a planning, somehow it was naturally coordinated. We all ended up having a great time without sticking Mom in the kitchen by herself for 8 hours. And don’t let me forget cleanup. It’s like a military process. When the meal is done—boom!—everybody gets up with five things in their hands and it all goes on an assembly line for the SWAT team in the kitchen. Thanksgiving is one of the few times when cleaning up after is actually fun! Maybe the only time.

We are a fairly large clan and we do something called the Oz Family Turkey Bowl, because, of course, my dad—Mr. Healthy—had to find a way to work activity and exercise into the biggest eating day of the year. So we get twenty-five people together and have ten-on-ten full-contact football with five subs for the people who, inevitably, pull a muscle or get a scrape. To give you some idea of how seriously we take this, my mother played this game when she was eight months pregnant with me. Of course we have a real turkey, but we also have a tofu turkey, or, as we call it, a Tofurkey.

Back in the day (when I was in business for myself), we didn’t have much money and I usually didn’t have much of a Thanksgiving anyway since the holidays were big work days. One year, I decided to have my own Thanksgiving and I wanted to treat myself. My girlfriend Greta and I bought this beautiful china … like totally gorgeous, not to mention very expensive. We picked a few different patterns, a beautiful tablecloth. We invited people over—mostly holiday stragglers with nowhere else to go. Dinner was super—six or seven courses. It was a special night.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year by far. It’s all about food, family, friends, and football. Which is good. My grandfather used to do it, but we took over in the past couple of years. All our families are there plus people who work for us who are too far from their families to drive home. So it can be anywhere between twenty-five and fifty people at our house, so it is truly a feast. We have one ginormous table where we seat about twenty-eight to thirty people, and the kids sit at another one. Quite a spectacle!

I had a big family with lots of cousins on both the eastern side of Washington State and the western side of the state, so we kind of alternated hosting duties every year.
