When I was first hired by RTÉ to work as the presenter of ‘Not Enough Hours’, I went through hours and hours of training to become more comfortable on camera. I learnt a number of skills for presenting pieces to camera and delivering memorised scripts in a more natural way.
One of the individuals RTÉ hired to work with me was the voice coach Poll Moussoulides. Poll had worked with such Hollywood legends and celebrities as Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Dreyfuss, Pierce Brosnan and Angela Lansbury. He was obviously world class at what he did, and it was a great opportunity to learn from him.
Instantly we hit it off. I learnt a massive amount from Poll about how to use my voice more effectively. One of the things he emphasised was the importance of variety in how I spoke. Being engaging, he explained, means using a diverse range of sounds that ensure you keep the attention of whoever is listening. It’s also essential to make sure that there’s plenty of variety in your tone so that you can speak with different vocal characteristics to create focus and more fully animate your communication.
It’s obvious enough that to sound charismatic you have to learn how to speak in a charismatic way. What this means is that your voice must be able to convey emotion easily through tone and rhythm. So, because breath is the source of all vocal activity, it’s important to practise speaking by breathing with all the related muscles activated so that you have the power and support you need.
When you do this, your voice will flow more comfortably and it will also help you to confidently project your voice without feeling like you have to shout. An additional benefit is that the resonance created from a well-produced voice allows sound to easily flow through your body and to be more connected to your message. This improves the quality of your voice, the ease of your delivery and will have a big influence on whether or not people will like to listen to you.
Also, practise doing lots of different things with your voice. Acquire as much vocal flexibility as possible. It will make a great difference to your charismatic appeal. The tone of your voice is a fantastic tool that you can also use to create different states in those with whom you speak. The ability to alter your tone and the rhythm of your voice enables you to create different states (including altered states) in other people.
When you speak to someone, you’re bathing them in tonality. It affects their entire body. Therefore by learning to control your tone and tempo you can master your ability to lead people into the states you want them to be in. If you want a person to feel excited you must use an excited tone of voice. If you want them to feel relaxed you must use a relaxed tone. A fast rhythm in your voice won’t help someone become more relaxed, but it may help them become more excited and motivated.
