Women in the Missionary Movement

The missionary movement was the largest of the mass women’s movements of the 19th century. This meant that hosts of women were already mobilized in missions when the Pentecostal revival arrived on the scene. Missions, of course, was the heartbeat of Quakerism from the beginning, and it was also an important concern of the holiness people as the 20th century dawned. On the field, women were free to function in all aspects of ministry, while at home, women’s missionary societies provided every kind of support and literature, and held missionary conventions and institutes. Groups such as A. B. Simpson’s Christian and Missionary Alliance trained and supported women in missionary activity, and many CMA women became leaders in the early Pentecostal revival. Surely the consecration and mobility of women missionaries became a main channel for the dispersion of the Pentecostal message around the world.
