The summer flew by in a whirlwind of wood chips, paint and fundraisers. The committee agreed they would not name the original restored standers as the raffle to “adopt-a-horse” still seemed to be the most effective money maker any of them could devise. It was hard to believe that Labor Day weekend was here and by Wednesday, school would be back in session.

Millie and the Boss Lady arrived at the fairgrounds in the late afternoon. The music from the bandstand stage below, the ringing from the rides to the left and the screaming of children tearing everywhere infused the park with a joyous mood. They strolled about checking out the rides and booths. The raffle drawing for the horse naming wouldn’t be until seven that evening.

They found Nan and Joe manning the carousel booth. Large blow-up photos taped to the sides of the tent framed the soon-to-be-adopted horse mounted in the center. “Wow,” Millie exclaimed. “This is really great.”

Millie slipped behind the table to get a closer look at the pictures on display. Barbara had delivered as promised. She’d sent a young woman, Pam, from the yearbook committee over for the brochure. Pam visited throughout the summer, capturing large portions of the work, now on display. As Millie moved along one side, the merry-go-round lady slipped behind the front table and began her study from the other end; they met at the middle photograph—it was an enlargement from the press kit; Sam and Morris, ages ten and twelve, standing with a carousel horse outside their uncle’s factory.

Nan came over to stand with them. “Great stuff, huh?”

“It’s amazing.” Millie turned toward Nan. “How are you guys doing?”

“It’s insane.” Nan bubbled over, “The jars keep filling, everyone wants to name this horse.”

“Cool, does it make us rich yet?”

“Nope. But I’m hoping it keeps me out of the pokey for ripping off creditors.” As she talked, Nan kept glancing back over her shoulder at the table. “One sec,” she motioned and walked back over to Joe. “You okay hon?” At his nod, Nan grabbed Millie and tugged her back to the photos. “So this is my new brainstorm—calendars—what do you think?”

Nan beamed at Millie and the merry-go-round lady, clearly enthused. When neither one answered quickly, she demanded, “What!”

“Um, Nan, don’t you think it’s a bit premature?” Millie stammered a bit, looked to her right to find the merry-go-round lady amazingly fascinated by the young Sam and Morris and knew she was in this one alone. “I mean,” she gestured to the photos of disassembled horses, clamped-on body parts and the like, “don’t most people want calendars of pretty horses mounted on the carousel?”

“I don’t know.” Nan felt a little exposed. “Everyone’s all wrapped up in this. I think they might want photos of the whole process.” As defensively as it was uttered, it gave Nan another idea, “Ooh, there’s a thought,” she tugged on both Millie and the merry-go-round lady’s sleeves. Her energy had her literally bouncing, “A newspaper!”

“Pardon?”

“Well not really a paper
