In the Darkness

He discovered the next day, after saying goodbye to Sable as she rode back to her aunt’s house, that the returning victors weren’t all that was brought back to Argny. Another, second group rode through the gate not long after Fletcher led in his warriors. This group had the human prisoner with them.

It was all the maids could talk about as they worked. While Caden had expected to be interrogated endlessly about his disappearance into Fletcher’s room, he discovered that no one seemed to care about him. The human being kept in the old slave quarters underground was far more interesting.

“He had eyes like the devil,” Janie, one of the young maids said. She was usually at the bottom of the totem pole, but as the only one who’d seen the human she was currently enjoying an upswing in popularity. “Big, black eyes that were darkness itself.”

Maura, who was older and wiser, snorted in disbelief. “He’s a human, not a demon. He looks just like any of us do when we’re not in wolf form. How the hell else would we have blended in?”

“This one wasn’t like other humans,” Janie insisted, sensing her audience was slipping away. “He’s a murderer. And he looks it, too.”

Rolling her eyes, Maura returned to her work, but the others were still hanging onto Janie’s words. Even if they weren’t true, the fascination was enough to make them listen.

Caden tuned them out, his mind filled with thoughts of Fletcher. All he could think was: want want want, over and over again. He’d woken to an empty bed that morning and slept in enough to miss most of breakfast. With Raina and the betas already there when he arrived, Caden barely got the chance to exchange eye contact with Fletcher, much less anything else.

But the secretive smile he got was enough to make him certain they were going to repeat the success of the previous night. It sent Caden’s thoughts spiraling for the rest of the day, distracting him from his other work.

Until he was headed back to his room that evening and heard a voice further down the hall that put his hackles up. It was strange and eerie in the grey twilight. Unable to stop himself, Caden followed the sound down the hallway to a heavy tapestry hanging against the doorway. The cloth was old, tattered, and worn; no one had bothered coming here for a while.

Behind the tapestry, crazed laughter sounded out, followed by a singing voice. “Oh my dar-ling, oh my dar-ling…”

Pushing back the heavy cloth, he found a hidden door. Of course. What strange fools their werewolf ancestors were, making new things old and old things new. Their obsession with bringing centuries-old architecture and lifestyle to the New World meant this mansion he lived in had secret passageways and old dungeons.

Behind the door was a staircase into the dark. The voice was coming stronger now, muttering soft gibberish. Propping the tapestry open, he let the dim light and his werewolf senses guide him down the steps.
