At 2.00 am a black BMW crawled slowly past the front of Charlieâs.
Its four occupants peered out of the windows, looking to see if they had a welcoming committee. There was no one on the steps, save for one Bermuda short and Hawaiian shirt-clad casualty of too much sun combined with too much sangria, and he was staggering his way home looking just like heâd emptied his guts at the bottom of the nearest palm tree.
Cars clogged both sides of the road outside, so the driver had to carry on further along about a quarter of a mile before they could pull over and park. The four Dutchmen got out and started to walk back towards the bar. They would have to walk in and out, but it was of no matter to these arrogant cunts. They couldnât see any problem in going in â blowing their English âfriendsâ to bits â then strolling off down the road and away in the beamer.
The sunstroked straggler had disappeared by the time they reached the front of Charlieâs and they headed up the stairs and inside, past the two Brixton-born bouncers Charlie had recruited to meet and greet punters the âLondon wayâ. They stayed silent on this occasion as the Dutchmen, led by a bearded six-foot-plus mug trying to look cool in a flared suit, entered the bar to the final seconds of Jim Diamondâs âShouldâve Done Betterâ.
The flared Dutchman was followed by the tall blond guy, dressed in jeans and leather waistcoat. It turned out that Holland was the land that style fucking forgot.
They were met by the dance floor crowds, slowed down now thanks to a smoochy number, but still heavy in numbers. Fingering their guns under their shitty clothes, they made their way towards the VIP area through the slowly swaying couples.
But there was no one in the VIP area.
The red leather seats were all vacant â with only a half-empty pint of lager and an empty glass of G&T on the tables to suggest anyone had been there.
Confused, the Dutch mob exchanged glances as they stared around the packed bars. No one. It looked like the English gangsters had bottled it, fucked off: their arseâ oles had went.
After splitting up for a last recce, the four met up again at the front door and shrugged. Theyâd either won, or they would have to finish the English cowards another time. With the night judged a dead loss, they emerged into the clammy air for the walk back to the BMW.
It was quiet outside as they trotted down the stairs, with beardy Dutchman taking the lead; even the bouncers were nowhere to be seen.
Halfway down the stairs, the eerie still of the night was shattered by the terror-filled screams of the Dutchmen whoâd spotted â too late as it turned out â the five Englishmen whoâd appeared from behind the cars parked on the opposite side of the road. Charlie, Sammy, Danny, Ronnie and Frankie rose up as one, firing
