Chapter 26

Katrina

This is completely out of line but I can’t help it.

I’m sitting in my car outside Tyra’s house trying to figure out why she changed her number and why she blocked me on social media after my sister’s murder was announced. I stare at her front door, studying it as if it might somehow give me the keys to my dilemma.

Her car isn't outside, but I decide to knock anyway. No answer.

Determined, I head to Burger Barn, where Tyra works. As soon as I walk in, I spot her trying to slip into the back. Our eyes meet, and she immediately tells me to leave.

“Why did you change your number, Tyra?” I demand, fighting to hold back my emotions.

“Just go, Katrina,” she snaps, her voice cold and dismissive.

I can’t believe her. How can she be so rude at a time like this? I could see if I came in here guns blazing, but I’ve been as calm as I can muster. “Don’t you care that Kaycee’s dead? You were a bridesmaid at her wedding, for Christ's sake!” At this point, I’m clearly grasping for straws, trying to get her to show some sense of compassion for my loss, but I don’t know why I expect this when she hasn’t reached out to anyone in the family. I asked Mom and Dad and neither of them heard from her either.

What is Tyra’s deal? Why not show common courtesy?

A crowd starts to gather, her coworkers whispering. Tyra's face hardens, and she warns me, “I’ll call the police if you don’t leave.” She’s still standing by the kitchen door like she might run back there at any moment. It’s not like I’m going to follow her if she does, but still, her actions are pissing me off.

“Come on, Tyra,” I say through gritted teeth. “I just want to talk to you. What if it was your sister?”

Something flashes in her eyes and for a moment I think I’ve convinced her to talk to me but my efforts are in vain. Her face hardens again and she adamantly points to the door.

“Go,” she says. “This is the last time I’m asking.”

Why is this bitch so weird? What did Kaycee see in her? I think back to Josslyne’s comment about how she was surprised Kaycee asked Tyra to be in her wedding. From the way she’s acting now, I can see why she thought my sister was crazy. Who does this?

I sense Tyra's hiding something, but I can't risk getting arrested. As I turn to go, she blurts, “Kaycee was a filthy whore who couldn’t keep her legs closed!”

Rage blinds me, and I turn back, lunging for her, but a manager grabs me, pulling me back. "Out, now!" he orders.

I can’t believe the audacity of this girl. From her smug smile, I can tell she only made her comment to get under my skin, but who would be so childish at a moment like this? Does she have any respect for the dead? Obviously not.
