M.J.: Cardinal Cronin, what is Bishop Quillâs present condition?
S.C.: Heâs intermittently conscious. He recognized me. He, ah, kissed my ring.
OTHER JOURNALIST: What happened to him, Cardinal?
S.C.: Someone injected a very large dose of heroin into his veins, almost enough to kill him.
M.J.: Will that have a permanent effect on him?
S.C.: We hardly think so. In the short term, he is likely to be disoriented and confused.
O.J.: Has he taken heroin long, Cardinal?
S.C. (Controlling impatience): Anyone who knows Bishop Quill knows that he does not use drugs. He hardly even drinks. This event is part of an attempt to discredit him. We do not propose to let that happen.
M.J.: Why would someone want to discredit him, Cardinal? Might it be because of the unrest in his parish?
S.C.: I hardly think so, Mary Jane. Itâs much too violent an assault to be the result of a parish feud.
O.J.: Have you informed the Pope?
S.C.: I was in touch with the Nunciature and the Congregation of Bishops this morning. Itâs too late in the evening to call them again. Iâll report tomorrow.
OJ.: Will the Vatican remove him because of this incident?
S.C.: That would be most unfair.
O.J.: How soon will he return to his parish, Cardinal?
S.C.: The doctors say it may take some weeks. I called Father Matt Dribben, the retired pastor of Forty Holy Martyrs, and asked him to become temporary administrator.
M.J.: How did all this happen? I mean the L train and the bishop and everything?
S.C. (Thin smile): I think Iâll leave that to the police, Mary Jane.
M.J.: What sort of man would create such a plot, Cardinal?
S.C.: Person, Mary Jane.
M.J. (Embarrassed): Yes, Cardinal.
S.C.: The same kind of person who makes computer viruses.
O.J.: Will you remain here with the Bishop?
S.C.: Of course. Thank you all very much.
