Brie smiled at the text on her phone again. Though still a little nervous about going to church, she looked forward to seeing Jesse again, especially after their last time together got cut short.
âArenât you going to buy anything?â Ariel asked as she held up a designer dress.
âIâd love to, but I canât.â Brieâs father hadnât explicitly said she couldnât buy anything else, but she was pretty sure that his ultimatum included that detail. Besides, she didnât need anything else. Brie realized some of her shopping had been out of boredom, but since having to get a job, she didnât find herself bored very often. Tired? Yes, but bored? Not so much.
âCome on. Just a little something small for yourself?â Ariel scanned the shelves and grabbed a small bag. âHere, how about this?â
Brie shook her head. âI donât need a new bag. Besides,â she leaned in and turned the price tag over, âitâs two thousand dollars. My dad made me get a job because I spent too much, remember?â
Ariel rolled her eyes. âYouâre no fun anymore. Fine, Iâll get it for both of us. It will look great with my outfit for the party tonight. You are still coming, arenât you?â
Brie hesitated. She did want to go out after a long week of work, but she didnât want to be out too late since she was attending church with Jesse. The last thing she needed was to show up with dark circles under her eyes.
âYou canât skip the party. Itâs like the biggest event since⦠sinceâ¦â
âSince the last event?â Brie supplied with a smile. The party was going to be big, but not the event Ariel was making it out to be.
âKade will be there.â A mischievous smile crossed Arielâs face.
Conflicting emotions battled inside Brie. She did want to see Kade again, didnât she? âIâm coming. I just canât stay all night because Iâm seeing Jesse in the morning.â
âOn Sunday? Where could you possibly be going on Sunday morning?â Her eyes widened as the only logical conclusion came to mind. âYouâre going to church with him?â
Brie shrugged.
âWhy? You called the bet off. Itâs not like you have to keep trying to impress him.â
âIâd already agreed to go. It would be rude not to.â
Ariel shook her head. âWho are you? And what did you do with my friend?â
Brie knew Ariel was teasing, but she was beginning to wonder the same thing. Ever since she had gone to the childrenâs hospital with Jesse, she couldnât get those kids out of her head. She wanted to do something for them. Something like Jesse did. Sheâd have to discuss ideas with her father. He didnât want her spending money frivolously, but surely, he wouldnât be against a donation to the hospital.
âIâm still here.â Brie glanced at her watch. She still needed to shower after her shift this morning. She had met Ariel right after she got off. âShouldnât we get ready for that party now?â
âFine, let me check out, and then we can swing by your place.
