Chapter 13
An hour after everyone had finished breakfast we headed out to the back of the villa where two helicopters were waiting in the open field. Everyone was excited, I could feel the energy of the group, and my own excitement made me feel a little bit more a part of it all. Silas, Adam, Zoe and Loukas all headed over to the first helicopter, leaving me with Tanner and Zachary.
“I guess we’re going in this one!” Tanner stepped up into the helicopter and Zach followed behind him. In my mind I was cursing them for not being proper gentleman and letting me go in first, or even offering to help me up, but then suddenly Zach’s head popped back out and he reached for me.
“Here, let me help you.” He took my hand as I stepped in and our eyes met. We held each other’s gaze for a few seconds and I was reminded how handsome he was. I found him more than annoying, but he had little moments of chivalry and his good looks were undeniable.
“Um, thanks.” I sat down next to him with Tanner opposite us.
“Here’s your headset. We can all talk to each other through the microphones.” He handed me the bulky headset. He was assuming this was my first time in a helicopter, which it wasn’t, but I kept that to myself and put on the headset.
One of the pilots suddenly appeared and gave us all a thumb’s up. Tanner clapped excitedly.
“I feel like a kid. I can’t believe I’ve never done this before.” His voice crackled through the headset as the propellers lifted us up. “Gabrielle, is this your first time too?”
I could see how childlike Tanner was and part of me wanted to lie so he didn’t feel alone, but I knew it didn’t really matter. “No, I’ve actually done this before. A few times.” Zach turned and looked at me and I could see that he was surprised. “But, I’ve never seen Monaco from the sky. I’m sure this is going to be amazing.” I looked back at Zach and smiled at him. He didn’t even invite me on the trip, but for some reason I was now trying to reassure him that I would enjoy the experience. Again, there was an intense glance between us, but I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
We went up into the air, above the villa which looked even more impressive from above. We could all see the deep blue pool and the landscaped gardens which eventually disappeared as we flew across more fields and trees until we reached the built-up city.
“The famous Rock of Monaco is just to your left.” The pilot’s voice spoke into my ears as we all looked down. The large rocky mound jutted out from the coastline with wild greenery embellishing its sides. It was impressive, intimidating and surreal.
“Wow, everything looks so different from up here.” Tanner gazed down and it was hard not to smile at his giddy excitement.
“We’ll shortly be flying next to the Prince’s Palace.
