Chapter 12

Scott

Since the night they kissed, Scott’s fire had been relit in a spectacular way.

More than anything, he wanted to extinguish it with Judy, but she had made it clear in the weeks since then that she wasn’t giving him the time of day.

She kept avoiding him, making up excuses to back out of their scheduled dates. She had already mentioned wanting to see less of him, and now she had put things into action.

He concluded it was best to follow her lead and leave her alone as much as possible.

He didn’t want to hurt her, and he didn’t want to anger Jim, yet part of him only wanted her more.

Meanwhile, he had needs, and since Judy had made it clear where she stood, he needed to see to them.

He had no reason to feel guilty, did he?

Judy knew from the very beginning this was just a business deal and their arrangement required exclusivity only to the public eye.

He had an agreement to be discreet in his dealings with the opposite sex outside of her, yet he still hadn’t taken advantage of it thus far.

Sure, he’d agreed with Martha that it was best to refrain from any sort of mingling with the opposite sex that could take their arrangement down in the beginning; he’d promised to stay away from casual dalliances—at least for a few weeks while their story got its legs.

She was the chick put in front of him most often, he had finally noticed how lovely she actually was, plus she let it slip that she was still untouched, which always got a guy interested. The boy in them always wanted to tag something “First!”

And sure, the kiss had thrown him all the way off—not because her lips were soft and sweet, and not because she felt so natural pressed against him, wrapped in his arms, but because an unfamiliar wave of feeling took over him, one he had trouble controlling.

It was more than a pleasant feeling—it felt like a dangerous growing addiction.

The more he was around her, the more he suspected that strange, wonderful feeling would grow, and the less he trusted himself not to seduce her, so he let her get away with avoiding him.

It was probably best.

Still, he needed to recenter himself; he needed some kind of relief.

He had flipped through his virtual little black book but found himself uninterested in the familiar names of convenient bed warmers. He wanted none of them; he wanted Judy.

He told himself it was just because he hadn’t had her before; Judy was unchartered territory.

He knew there was more to it, but he refused to acknowledge it.

And then there she
