To fit a bridle

The snaffle bit must fit the horse’s mouth so that it is neither so narrow that it pinches, nor so wide that the joint falls far down in the horse’s mouth. The mouthpiece should be quite thick and single-jointed. Some horses object to having a bridle fitted, however carefully this is done, and in such cases the bridle may be put on like a headcollar with the bit fastened to the off-side cheek piece only and allowed to hang down. The bit can then be put in the horse’s mouth very gently before securing the near-side cheek piece firmly enough so that the corners of the horse’s mouth just wrinkle. If the bit is too low the horse can easily get his tongue over it, if too high it will be uncomfortable.

To fit a cavesson with a bridle – see page 128.
