Chapter Eleven

Linda stepped through the entrance of her parents’ country home with eight minutes to spare.

“Welcome home, Miss Linda.” Herman, her family’s longtime butler, greeted her. “Your parents are already in the dining room.”

“Thank you, Herman.” She set her purse on the table in the wide entryway and made her way past the grand parlor and the library. She entered the dining room, her eyebrows lifting when she discovered three people sitting inside instead of two. Winston rose at her entrance.

She fought against her irritation, both that Winston was intruding on her time with her family and that he could possibly try to undermine her efforts at work or, worse, cause her father unnecessary stress. “Winston. I wasn’t aware you would be joining us tonight.”

“Your mother was kind enough to invite me.”

Of course. Linda moved to her father’s side and kissed his cheek. “Have you been resting?”

“Your mother won’t let me do anything else, but I do want to hear about the renovation,” he said. “Are things going well?”

“Everything is right on schedule.” She took her seat.

“No work talk tonight,” her mother said.

“We aren’t talking about work,” her father countered. “We’re talking about a project that makes our daughter happy.”

Winston held up his wine glass. “We were just talking about that building earlier this week.”

Determined to keep Winston’s and Bruce’s opinions from causing her father more stress, she spoke before Winston could elaborate. “The school already has a solid list of interested students. As soon as the rezoning is approved, they’ll hold their auditions.”

“When is the rezoning going up for vote?” her dad asked.

“Next week.” She smiled. “By the time you come back to the office in June, most of the renovation will be complete.”

“I really don’t think I need to wait that long,” her dad said. “I feel fine.”

“And you’ll keep feeling fine at home,” her mom said in a firm tone. “You’re going to follow the doctor’s orders whether you like it or not.”

Her father frowned at his water glass. “I don’t like it.”

Linda couldn’t help but smile. “Why doesn’t that surprise me?”

Two of the kitchen staff entered with dinner.

After everyone was served, her mother cut into her pheasant. “I’ve made a decision.”

Her dad took a bite of his dinner, and for a moment, Linda thought he was going to ignore her mother’s cue that it was his turn to comment in the conversation. After he chewed and swallowed, he asked, “And what decision is that, dear?”

“We’re having a party.” She cut into her pheasant again. “We’re going to celebrate that your father is still with us.”

Her dad seemed to ponder his wife’s decision. “When exactly are we having this party?”

“June 8. We’ll make a weekend out of it,” her mom said. “Winston, you must join us.”

Winston gave her a winning smile. “I’d be delighted.”

Linda looked from one parent to the other, finally settling on her mother. “Are you sure you want to take on planning a party while Dad is recovering?”

“It will be a good distraction for both of us.
