Chapter 11

Keeping smuggling secrets on the Devon Coast was the stock and trade of its people. And Darius’s small cove that harbored his favorite ship, The Resilient, was one of the last secrets of the county.

The ship was his pride and joy.

He loved it as if it was a living thing. Over the years, it had become a part of him, just like his arm or his leg.

It was a beautiful, swift cutter. Like a greyhound on the seas, it sailed so smoothly one could feel as if they were flying when the sails were full.

Oh, he loved it dearly, and he could not wait to see what Tess thought of it. For she was a creature of the Channel as well. She would understand it when she saw it.

They were keeping it tucked into this small cove for minor repairs and to keep it in excellent condition.

The black sails were tied up in the rigging, and he took her hand and guided her up the gangway.

They crossed over to the deck, and then he allowed her to wander about.

Her eyes were wide, her mouth parted ever so slightly with the wonder he’d hoped to see.

Galley ran back and forth, delighted. At present, there were only a few men aboard, and he sent them off the ship to eat their repast so that he could share this moment with Tess alone.

Most of his crew were in town, getting ready for the next foray out.

She wandered happily, taking in every detail, her hands trailing gently over the polished wood. She stared up at the rigging and then examined the various aspects of the ship.

“It is a marvel,” she breathed.

“Thank you,” he replied, folding his arms over his chest. “I rather like it.”

Her lips quirked in an amused grin. “I would imagine you do.”

And then she looked at him. “Shall we have a race to the top?”

“What?” he asked, certain he’d misheard her.

“I’d love to see how fast you climb the rigging.”

He blinked. “I beg your pardon?”

And then she ran for it. She did not even bother to hoist up her skirts before she started pulling herself up quickly towards the crow’s nest. He let out a shocked note and then ran to his side of the rigging and immediately began climbing up.

On a cutter, everything was smaller. Especially this one, which had been built for speed. The old frigates, they were going to be a thing of the past. He knew it in his gut.

Only ships that could be swift and make quick voyages would last.

If the ships were going to remain large, something would have to change. Something was coming, he knew. Change always was. But for now, he adored his vessel. And as he raced up hand over foot, he was astonished by the speed she achieved.

Because she was smaller, because she was lighter, she flew like a bird up that rope until she was at the zenith, laughing, her face turning upwards towards the sun.

He grinned. “That was a feat!” he exclaimed.
