Pozières still held a magnetic attraction for Bean, and he devoted most of his initial report to describing the battlefield and reminiscing about the scenes he had witnessed in 1916. Three-quarters of the way through the report, he admitted he was indulging his own specific interests â âI have only mentioned the landmarks at Pozièresâ â but by then, he had only left enough space to half-heartedly name several other sites he visited.41 His account was published in a major paper, but unlike much of his earlier work, it was an overwhelmingly sentimental piece that did not attempt to place his wanderings within the broader narrative of the First World War. Written in such a way, Beanâs and other veteransâ accounts resonated little with the growing number of Australians to whom names like Pozières and Mouquet Farm were completely foreign.
