It was 8:21 A.M. on Thursday morning. I was standing near the front doors of SMS. Kids were streaming by me, talking a mile a minute. Finally I joined them. No one said a word to me. I’m not sure anyone even noticed me. (Hey, maybe I was invisible!) Was this good or bad? It could have meant I looked fine and fitted in so well that no one could tell I was new. Or it could have meant the kids were snobs and were ignoring me.

I flattened myself against a wall, away from the shouting kids, and studied my schedule card. My homeroom was 212. Okay. Second floor. Now where were the stairs?

I stepped into the crowd, hesitated, and was nearly run over.

“Hey! Move it!” someone yelled.

“Okay, okay.”

Someone grabbed my elbow, a guy my age. “You lost?” he asked.

“Who me? Of course not.”

The guy frowned. “Where are you from?”

I almost said, “Mars.” Then I thought better of it. “Louisville.” I hurried on as if I knew exactly where I were going.

Somehow I made it through the morning and even wound up in the cafeteria at lunchtime. I had to admit that the morning had not been quite as bad as I’d thought it would be. In homeroom this very nice girl named Stacey or maybe Tracey (I couldn’t remember which it was) had introduced herself to me. When I told her where I was from she had just nodded. But she’d turned up in my English class later, and had remembered my name (even if I hadn’t remembered hers).

Now I gazed around the cafeteria wondering where to sit. I got prepared to sit by myself and feel dorky. And alone.
