âI donât like your attitude,â said Orren Boyle. âSo long as we respect the rights of the workers, weâll want you to respect the rights of the industrialists.â
âWhich rights of which industrialists?â drawled Kinnan.
âIâm inclined to think,â said Dr. Ferris hastily, âthat Point Two, perhaps, is the most essential one of all at present. We must put an end to that peculiar business of industrialists retiring and vanishing. We must stop them. Itâs playing havoc with our entire economy.â
âWhy are they doing it?â asked Taggart nervously. âWhere are they all going?â
âNobody knows,â said Dr. Ferris. âWeâve been unable to find any information or explanation. But it must be stopped. In times of crisis, economic service to the nation is just as much of a duty as military service. Anyone who abandons it should be regarded as a deserter. I have recommended that we introduce the death penalty for those men, but Wesley wouldnât agree to it.â
âTake it easy, boy,â said Fred Kinnan in an odd, slow voice. He sat suddenly and perfectly still, his arms crossed, looking at Ferris in a manner that made it suddenly real to the room that Ferris had proposed murder. âDonât let me hear you talk about any death penalties in industry.â
Dr. Ferris shrugged.
âWe donât have to go to extremes,â said Mouch hastily. âWe donât want to frighten people. We want to have them on our side. Our top problem is, will they ... will they accept it at all?â
âThey will,â said Dr. Ferris.
âIâm a little worried,â said Eugene Lawson, âabout Points Three and Four. Taking over the patents is fine. Nobodyâs going to defend industrialists. But Iâm worried about taking over the copyrights. Thatâs going to antagonize the intellectuals. Itâs dangerous. Itâs a spiritual issue. Doesnât Point Four mean that no new books are to be written or published from now on?â
âYes,â said Mouch, âit does. But we canât make an exception for the book-publishing business. Itâs an industry like any other. When we say âno new products,â itâs got to mean âno new products.â â
âBut this is a matter of the spirit,â said Lawson; his voice had a tone, not of rational respect, but of superstitious awe.
âWeâre not interfering with anybodyâs spirit. But when you print a book on paper, it becomes a material commodityâand if we grant an exception to one commodity, we wonât be able to hold the others in line and we wonât be able to make anything stick.â
âYes, thatâs true. Butââ
âDonât be a chump, Gene,â said Dr. Ferris. âYou donât want some recalcitrant hacks to come out with treatises that will wreck our entire program, do you? If you breathe the word censorshipâ now, theyâll all scream bloody murder. Theyâre not ready for itâas yet. But if you leave the spirit alone and make it a simple material issueânot a matter of ideas, but just a matter of paper, ink and printing pressesâyou accomplish your purpose much more smoothly. Youâll make sure that nothing dangerous gets printed or heardâand nobody is going to fight over a material issue.
