CHAPTER FIFTEEN: Farewell to Caer Pren

The pitter-patter of running feet halted his thoughts. In stormed Brawd and Chwillen with the ladies close behind.

“Chwill . . . ” Ian began as he turned towards the doorway.

“No time to talk gentlemen,” Chwillen barked. “Kai has seen some of the Agrona forces gathering on the south side of Caer Pren. We must go immediately.”

“They must have received word that we have outside visitors here or they wouldn’t dare risk being seen in the light,” Etaina added.

“We’ll go through the secret caverns below and out on the north side farthest from them. Here, take these and come with us,” Brawd said, handing each of the three humans a new cloak, a pack that Ian guessed contained provisions, and a flask for drinking.

Suddenly, an explosion ricocheted against an outside structure not fifty feet from where they were gathered, shaking the very floor they stood on and causing great pieces of wall to cave in. The two beetle men and Etaina, calling for their guests to follow, raced in the opposite direction of the sound and though Ian had a ton of questions, he responded immediately, unlike when he had been a mere boy.

Seeing Brawd glancing with indecision over his shoulder as they made their way to their escape, Chwillen barked, “If we stay to fight we risk being seen as we exit and they will follow us to the queen.”

“You know I hate to flee from a battle as great as this, brother, but I must agree. It’s up to our warriors now,” stated Brawd as he and his brother both engaged in their forward-leaning run.

Chwillen led the unlikely pack while Brawd took up the anchor, continuing to look back longingly as they made their way. It was evident that the village was on high alert. Every newid had taken on their bug form and they were so busy scurrying about that the straight lines of flight Ian had noticed earlier were in disarray. Each frantically carried food supplies, weapons, or was in the process of bringing others to safety in the higher chambers.

Reaching their launching destination, the brothers and Etaina transformed without giving warning to their three human companions. Now that they weren’t children and were in a bit of a rush to stay alive, it seemed perfectly normal to Ian that the changelings would morph without notice. Without thinking, Elizabeth was on the back of her friend and protector, while Reese was told to get on Chwillen. Ian was a bit more muscular and heavy and would do best on Brawd.

Down the group dropped with dizzying speed. Ian felt every cell come alive—like he had been made for this day. Even though the newids were in a confused frenzy, they parted to make way for t, as if everyone knew that the group was about to do something of extreme importance. Brawd, ever the warrior, gave orders in the newid language as he broke through the crowd.

Suddenly, warning blasts shrilled throughout the city and the newids began to communicate fervently in their mother tongue to one another.
